Review: The Time Traveler’s Wife

The Time Traveler's Wife

The Time Traveler's Wife

James is a friend who writes movie reviews at: www.jamesfrazier.biz. I asked him to see The Time Traveler’s Wife and he graciously agreed to be a guest blogger.

“The Time Traveler’s Wife” is a film about a romance that refuses to falter in the face of great adversity. That’s nothing new, but the circumstances here are. The premise is pure sci-fi, and often shakily so at that, but there’s great warmth here that makes it easy for the heartstrings to be plucked, despite the improbabilities. Here’s love at its sunniest, which is to say that affection burns bright even as tragedy casts a cloud.
Eric Bana play Henry, the titular time traveler, and Rachel McAdams plays Clare, the titular wife. Their relationship is an offbeat one that unfolds like a shuffled deck of cards; he has a genetic disorder that causes him to vanish into thin air, reappearing into another time. These trips bring him in frequent contact with the important people in his life, particularly Clare, who he has effectively been romancing since she was six-years-old. Here one minute, gone the next, his friends and family come to know not just the Henry of their moment, but of others as well. It’s chronological to him, but others may not know which version of him they’re seeing, and what it is that he knows.

One would think that would impede the chances of his starting a meaningful relationship with Clare, but you should see them together; sweetness and light, one of the happiest screen couples you’d ever see. It’s to the credit of Bana and McAdams that what should be difficult to realize seems natural and warm, soul mates who would just as soon not suffer the anguish Henry’s unexpected departures ensures. Some couples are imperiled by war or disease or family, these one by leaps in time.

Henry and Clare are not complex characters, but they are likeable and empathetic. They’re mostly unencumbered by careers or marital tension or other things that get in the way of screen romance, but their love for one another, which starts in Clare’s childhood and Henry’s early twenties, never feels false. It’s Bana and McAdams’ job to tie our moods to ours, and they succeed admirably; when they’re happy, we’re happy, and when they suffer, we mourn.

And what’s the exact nature of Henry’s chronology troubles? The film sort of chafes at the question and largely avoids addressing it unless demanded of by the scene. Henry flings into the future, then the past, sometimes for a moment, others for weeks. Other than a lottery ticket, does he ever learn anything particularly useful in the future? It’s made clear that this timeline is a solid line, unalterable by his will. But these questions are moot, I suppose, when compared to how they influence his relationship with Clare.

Then again, that’s what we want to see. The result is somewhat akin to a ghost story, only instead a specter, this figment of the past is still living. Even if it’s a traditional story at the core, the means to an end are clever, a bittersweet twist on the knowledge that one day, even with the most valuable love, we’ll all fade out.

Hot Harvest Nights, San Carlos

Hot Harvest Nights, San Carlos

As I noted waaaay back in March, we’ve been trying to get a booth at the San Carlos Farmer’s Market.

Good news! We’re confirmed for markets in May, June and July. Watch for us at the first market of the season, May 6, 2010. We’ll be the ones with Jody Coyote earrings and big silly grins on our faces.

The market has a live band as well tons of people strolling around and shopping for organic food. Laurel Street is the restaurant district, so the outdoor seating is usually full of couples and families enjoying the action. Traditionally my favorite vendors have been 1) anyone with pluots, 2) the Dil Khush Indian lady with the killer samosas and 3) the English Rose scones-to-go.

Let’s go surfin’ now, everybody’s learnin’ how

My memories of going to the beach with my family are like snapshots: brightly-colored bumper cars. Cotton candy. Japanese glass fishing floats. Being held in front of someone on a rental horse because my legs weren’t long enough to reach the child stirrups. Standing in front of the world’s largest frying pan. That last actually is a snapshot in Mom’s album. I look at that now and wonder what the adults were thinking. I wonder if that frying pan is still there.

“My cat stole my earring…”

Posted in Ruminations at 10:18 pm by Administrator

Hi! My cat stole one of my favorite earrings ever, the silver flat spiral hoop #H090S and since it has been hopelessly lost somewhere in my house for months now, I am giving up on running across it.

Try looking under the sofa. That’s where Teddy keeps his treasures.

Teddy loves anything that rolls. He really loves anything that smells fruity and rolls. Thus we find old dessicated blueberries and grapes, cat treats, plastic bottle caps, those rings off milk jugs, toys and Sharpie pens.

You might think he pushes it under the sofa and forgets about it. Nope. I’ve seen him reach under and pull out a tiny rabbit-fur mouse. He knew exactly where he left it.

Yours truly will be giving a presentation on Winning Website Coupon Strategies for the ECommerce Merchants Trade Association (ECMTA), affiliated with PeSA (Professional eBay Sellers Alliance).

As our Executive Director Brandon Dupsky said, “At our eCommerce Summit in Atlanta there was a ton of buzz about the growing trend for buyers to include an online coupon discount into their buying decision. Merchants need to catch the coupon wave and we invited our very own coupon expert Charleen Larson to share coupon strategies that work. This workshop will provide you simple `take-home’ coupon tips to get you going right away.”

If you have your own website (and who doesn’t, these days?), want to have a website, sell on eBay and are tired of paying outrageous fees, this is a session and conference you won’t want to miss. Plus you’ll be in Las Vegas, where the locals are truly grateful for your business in this tough economic climate.

I have the materials from my presentation available for interested eCommerce professionals.

San Carlos, California…a great place to be

Posted in San Carlos at 4:41 pm by Administrator

San Carlos is the nicest little California town you’ve never heard of, unless (maybe) you live in the San Francisco Bay Area.  It has a bit of an undeserved rep for being boring.  Our offices are on Laurel Street, which is the heart of San Carlos  and studded with many restaurants and shops.

The Refuge, San Carlos

The Refuge, San Carlos

Just downstairs from us is a gastropub called the Refuge, known locally for their homemade pastrami and wide array of Belgian beers.  Might seem an odd combination but trust me, it works.  The pastrami is nothing like you’ve ever seen before:  thick slices of heart-of-the-navel brisket edged with pepper and spices.  You must try it.

Hot Harvest Nights, San Carlos

Hot Harvest Nights, San Carlos

Some years ago Reno and its neighbor city Sparks, Nevada premiered an event called Hot August Nights, which has spawned a slew of imitators.  The San Carlos version is Hot Harvest Nights, which kicks off in May and runs through September on Thursday evenings with organic produce, street music, open shops and always something going on.  We hope to have a booth this year now that we’re part of the San Carlos business community.
